Event Description
As a 10-time Grammy winner, Bobby McFerrin is a beloved vocal artist with a gift for presenting his music in uniquely uplifting ways. Although known by most as the “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” guy, McFerrin continues to blur the boundaries between pop music and high art as he creatively explores his muse. His father, an operatic baritone and the first African-American man to sing at The Met in New York City, was also a renowned interpreter of black spirituals. That imposing legacy resonates on McFerrin’s new recording, spirityouall. His first release dedicated entirely to spiritual music contains tunes ranging from Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” to classic spirituals like “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” and five originals. But with McFerrin’s improvisational approach to singing, as well as instrumentation that includes pedal steel guitars, accordions, and mandolins, there is nothing traditional about this music. Get ready to feel the spirit as The Spirityouall Band, Jeff Carney acoustic bass, (Gil Goldstein piano/electric piano/accordion/arranger, David Mansfield violin/mandolin/national resonator guitar/lap steel, Armand Hirsch acoustic/electric guitar, Louis Cato drums/guitar/bass guitar/vocals, Madison McFerrin vocals) sanctifies the Royal Theatre with a truly righteous vibe.
“The band is great, the vibe folksy, and ‘I Shall Be Released’ one of the best versions of that much covered song ever.” – The Independent
