The Grande Mothers, scheduled to play at the Yukon Arts Centre tomorrow night, were denied entry into Canada last night. They were on their way from Los Angeles, where they are based, to Vancouver, where they were scheduled to play a concert at the Biltmore Cabaret tonight, before making their way up to Whitehorse for the concert that the Yukon Arts Centre was presenting on March 5, at 8 pm. The Grande Mothers, Re:Invented, is a band centered around three Mothers of Invention alumni, and is widely considered to be the closest thing to the original as far as keeping the music of Frank Zappa alive and well. Understandably, the band has been a staple on the international tour circuit for many, many years. Their last Canadian gig was a year ago… in Vancouver.
The Grande Mothers were delayed 5 hours at the border and eventually 2 band members (original MOI members) were sent back to LA, according to their agent in Canada, Todd Jordan of Paquin Entertainment, who received the call in the wee hours this morning. In a phone conversation moments ago, Todd Jordan agreed that Frank Zappa (who was the most vocal defender of freedom of expression in all its forms) must be rolling around in his grave.
We are confident that it is simply a matter of time before we can cut through the red maple tinged tape, at which point we will be only too happy to present the Grande Mothers at the Yukon Arts Centre. It is likely not to be until fall, however. We will keep you posted. The Yukon Arts Centre is offering ticket holders the choice of either getting a full refund or having their tickets held for the new concert date. Patrons can contact the YAC Box Office (667-8574 or [email protected]), but we will also contact them directly, thanks to our new ticketing system.
For further information on the Canadian customs situation, you can contact Todd Jordan directly at Paquin Entertainment (204) 988-1133, [email protected].
For physical events that happen at a specific time. For example a concert, or dance performance. If there are multiple shows, you can still duplicate your event to cover them all.
