Even a quarter-century after the untimely death of Frank Zappa, both the reputation and the music of rock’s most famous avant-garde artist remains controversial – and very much alive. In 2002, former members of The Mothers of Invention reunited for a special one-time performance in Leipzig to honour the 10th anniversary of Zappa’s death. Due to overwhelming demand, these Grande Mothers have gone on to tour North America and Europe extensively, headlining at jazz, blues and folk festivals. Comprised of three eras of Invention personnel but focusing mostly on classics from the ‘60s and ‘70s, these Mothers dish up Zappa’s signature mix of psychedelic rock, jazz-like harmonies, weird time signatures and harmonic complexity with great skill and a fabulous sense of fun.
