Event Description
. Friday, May 9th I.M.U. presents DAWNTREADER CD Release Party w/ special guests The TOP DRAWERS, CINDERPOP & EMPIRE ALLEY @ The Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir Street . Doors 9pm / $10
The TOP DRAWERS are not your typical Vancouver band. A full on throw back to times when the guitars were raunchy and the vocals had soul, the Top Drawers have all the swagger of the original '60s big beat revolution with a modern twist. With their keen knack for melody and their danceable and accessible sound, the Drawers are making a serious splash in the Vancouver pond.
DAWNTREADER is the band you hear faintly through neighbourhood garages, writing music that is perhaps beyond their age in sophistication. Their expressive, emotionally-charged songwriting traverses much terrain, from propulsive beats and grinding guitars to dark, cinematic open skies with dreamy atmospheric passages and hypnotic melodies. Recorded over the course of a year, their debut CD "Thoughts of an Exile" is an album of unbridled sincerity and ambition that's already garnering considerable buzz.
CINDERPOP play inventive, harmony-drenched, guitar-driven songs that range from orch-pop and space rock to bouncy Beatlesque powerpop. Featuring alumni of The Salteens, Moev & SK Robot, their eclectic sound combines free-floating vocals with dreamy melodies and pulsing guitars to great effect. Having performed with artists such as Stereolab and Sloan, Cinderpop are taking things further and farther out with their new album "A Lesson In Science", which will be debuted live this special evening. "Cinderpop mines the orch-pop territory and makes it sound new, fresh. Kinda like The Left Banke meets The Zombies with XTC... It's all wickedly cool!" -- Soul Shine Magazine
EMPIRE ALLEY - Armed with a unique combination of pop-rock, '80s punk and classical compositions, Empire Alley imparts pure emotion and raw energy. Within months of forming, rehearsing and recording a four track self-produced demo in their basement studio, the band entered and won the Factory Studios best band competition while their debut single "Orange Revolution" was played on CFOX. Their energized indie rock glimmers with flashes of Bloc Party, Stars and Metric, but it is their anthemic melodies, up-beat grooves and remarkable musicianship that set the band apart
