For over a decade, The Philosopher Kings have led the way in contemporary soul-pop, not to mention sartorial elegance. With Gerald Eaton’s soulful croon and the capable backing of the rest of the Kings, the Toronto act has earned numerous awards and nominations, best-selling records, hit singles (“Charms”, “Hurts to Love You”, “If I Ever Lose This Heaven”), and rave reviews for both its recorded output and its crowd-pleasing, high energy live shows.
Castles, the band’s latest, is a marvelous return to form, enticing fans back with what they’ve always loved about The Philosopher Kings while adding a more mature approach in songwriting, production, and musicianship. After all, the band members haven’t been idle in between albums—there’s the production team of Track and Field (a.k.a. Eaton and Brian West) and its platinum-selling work with Nelly Furtado. Guitarist James McCollum released a solo album under the name James Bryan and collaborated with Jay Levine as Prozzak, and formed Left Field Productions (FeFe Dobson). Collectively, the band has penned over 100 songs for artists as diverse as Tina Turner and Amanda Stott. With Castles, the band that opened the door to acts such as John Mayer and Maroon 5 is back to reclaim its rightful crown.
