The Tennessee Three: The Sound Behind Johnny Cash

From his early stardom until his last years as a performer, Johnny Cash chose only to work with one band and depended upon them to provide him with the unique sound that would come to be recognized by millions of fans the world over as "The Johnny Cash sound." Bob Wootton continued the unique "boom-chicka-boom" guitar that classifies most of Johnny's songs while W.S. Holland holds his own place in music history as the first Rock & Roll drummer. The music of The Tennessee Three is as important to the sound and successes of Johnny Cash as his own voice. Bob Wootton and W.S. Holland are music "Legends" in the truest sense of the word.

In 2006 the group released a new album titled "The Sound Must Go On" and began touring the world again with initial stops across America and Canada. Future tours of Europe are planned. The Tennessee Three performed live after the 2006 Academy Awards, a program viewed by more than 30-million people worldwide.

BOB WOOTTON (Guitar and Vocals) When Bob Wootton was a young man, his mother called him into the room and asked "What are you doing on the radio?" after hearing a Johnny Cash song, so similar were their voices. Bob became a fan of Cash and quickly learned all of his songs. As fate would have it in the fall of 1968, Bob was able to accompany Cash on stage when, by chance, two of Cash's band members missed their flight and he was left without a guitarist. Bob took the stage with Cash at the request of June Carter and from that night on, he was a member of Cash's band, The Tennessee Three.

The man Bob replaced was Cash's original guitarist, Luther Perkins, who had died in a house fire just a month before that first performance with Cash. Many felt that without Luther's unique style, the Johnny Cash stage show would be forever changed, but that was before Bob stepped in to the picture. All his years of studying Perkin's performances on records allowed Bob to seamlessly blend right in with the band and arguably allowed Johnny Cash to continue onward to even greater successes, playing on most of the biggest hits of Cash's career. Bob often accompanied Cash on vocals and has an unparalleled similarity to his dear friend's style of singing, which is why all who have been lucky enough to see The Tennessee Three perform live say they feel as though they are watching The Man In Black himself.

W.S. HOLLAND (Drums) WS’ musical career began in 1954 at Sun Records as drummer for Carl Perkins. He played on all of Carl’s Sun releases including the original “Blue Suede Shoes”, which was the first record to go to ..1 on all three charts. He was also drummer on the “Million Dollar Quartet” session. He toured with Carl and other Sun artists: Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash as a package.

In 1960, WS joined Johnny Cash, and “The Tennessee Two” became “The Tennessee Three”. Johnny Cash said to him, "I want you to work with me every show I play for as long as I'm in the business" and with Johnny being a man of his word and W.S. being a man of great talent, that's exactly what happened. So was born a music legend.

He played on all of Cash’s hits including: “Folsom Prison”, “I Walk The Line”, and “Ring of Fire”, as well as being the first drummer to play a full set of drums on the Grand Ole Opry. The Johnny Cash Show toured worldwide with highlights being the first country act to play Carnegie Hall and entertaining at the White House for four different Presidents.

WS was responsible for Carl Mann, Rayburn Anthony, and Little David Wilkins getting record deals with Sam Phillips and played on their first releases including Carl’s “Mona Lisa” and Rayburn’s “Alice Blue Gown”. WS also played on the Statler Brothers’ “Flowers on the Wall”, Marty Stuart’s first video “Hillbilly Rock”, and Bob Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline” album. W.S. is often cited by many respected drummers, including Ringo Starr of The Beatles, as being a major influence in their music careers.

WS remained with Johnny Cash as drummer and road manager until 1997 when Cash retired due to illness. Cash gave him the nickname “Father of the Drums”. WS has also been inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. August 5, 2004 WS was awarded the International Rockabilly Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award for “The Heartbeat of Mega Hits For 50 Years”.
