“Love Removal Machine”, “She Sells Sanctuary”, “Fire Woman”… these and other barrel-chested, howling Cult songs are among the highlights of the last two decades of rock ’n’ roll.
Since releasing the band’s debut Dreamtime in 1984, Cult lead singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy have been pioneers in writing and recording some of the most incendiary rock songs ever to get played on the radio. Astbury’s lupine shriek, his screaming, howling and panting vocal performances, underlaid by Duffy’s soaring, pulverizing guitars, have formed the core of a sound encompassing a groundbreaking blend of alternative, punk, Goth and rock. For a decade, the band was untouchable, as each album, including Love, Electric, and Ceremony, saw it expand its sound and gain more fans.
Though The Cult dissolved in 1995, ever-increasing interest reunited Astbury and Duffy a few years later, and the two have collaborated off and on, with Astbury taking time out to front a new version of The Doors. This year sees the vocalist and guitarist once again combining their talents for a tour that is sure to remind the world of the power, fury and heart-stopping showmanship of The Cult.
