Event Description
Join us at the OCTOBER 5TH OPEN HOUSE (780 BLANSHARD), where TWITCHING HOUR will be opening in the MoCL Gallery, featuring artists Amelia Beauregard & Sarah Massey!
Message from the artists: “Enter our bedroom at Twitching Hour, where the night’s memory is lacerated with a tender suspension of the self within the self. Incorporating dual projectors and an old gaming CRT TV, we invite you to bathe your senses in a hypnotic dream state and align every past version of yourself in a digitally-scrying seance. Whether you are afraid of the dark or not, our three-way video installation and full-room sculpture will have your mind walking a tightrope between lucidity and disorientation. When your body takes the long way back to the surface, can you feel the weight of your waking?”
About Amelia:
Creation for me is a messy, compulsive, and confusing process of being reborn again and again. Often driven by an urge to understand the raw, emotional potency of the unconscious mind, I find myself habitually picking at the scabs of the past. Dreams, memories, and their fleeting qualities bleed into all areas of my practice, and I am often leaving my projects feeling profoundly disoriented and soaked in honest vulnerability. Though I have my roots in the world as a painter, I now work primarily in video. Through complex soundscapes and layered footage, I aim to create an immersive alternate reality that hangs somewhere between my world and yours. The materiality of my work is ever-expanding outwards as I slowly let my eyes close and my heart open. The truth is this: I don’t really know what I’m doing or why. I am just the child I’ve always been, earnestly dipping my trembling fingers into the deep well of the unknown; letting the tears fall, letting the paint run, letting the light in.
About Sarah:
The roots of my practice are grounded in the concept of inner sanctuary. I create visual love letters to the intricate ways we give and seek meaning, referencing a cyclical nature of detachment and reattachment to the world. I know I’m following the right instinct when a piece feels like I’m either opening or suturing a wound. Although I specialize in oil painting, my practice has grown multidisciplinary to incorporate digital media and video art installation. Within my practice, I extricate a codification of symbols from a very dense body of sketches, journal entries, photos, and poetry. My video work is a composite of layered footage, balancing the distribution and organization of keyed-out color values and visual noise.
