Event Description

The 9th!

Created by award winning choreographers, Roberto Campanella and Robert Glumbek, The 9th!" provides an immersive experience that captures the essence of freedom and resilience witnessed during the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Through narratives of families separated and reunited, the production delves into the universal struggle against personal barriers. The athleticism and intense physicality of the choreography serve as poignant reminders of the human struggle behind each dancer. As they transcend performance constraints, raw emotions and vulnerabilities are revealed, inviting audiences to confront their own inner obstacles.

The production serves as a platform for reflection on historical events, emphasizing the significance of breaking down both physical and metaphorical walls. Ultimately, "The 9th!" celebrates the triumph of human connection and solidarity, fostering an understanding of the complexities of liberation and unity.

ProArteDanza, established in 2004, is a visionary contemporary dance company that champions bold new work and fosters the future of the art form through educational initiatives. Founded by Roberto Campanella and Joanna Ivey, the company quickly garnered acclaim with sold-out shows featuring Canada's finest dancers and choreographers. With a commitment to "passion in performance," ProArteDanza prioritizes artistic risk-taking and collaboration, welcoming diverse talent such as Mauro Astolfi, Emily Molnar, Syreeta Hector, and Kevin O'Day, among others. Awarded the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography in 2010, ProArteDanza continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences with its cutting-edge productions.

Roberto Campanella, Choreographer: PAD Co-Founder & Artistic Director
Born and raised in Rome, Roberto Campanella's journey in dance began at the Scuola Italiana di Danza Contemporanea. Joining the Compagnia Italiana di Danza Contemporanea in 1985 and later the esteemed Aterballetto, he honed his craft. At The National Ballet of Canada, where he rose to Soloist, Roberto made his mark as a choreographer. His acclaimed works include "Alice in Wonderland" and the Dora Mavor Moore Award-winning "...in between...". With nominations and awards like the Bonnie Bird Choreography Award and the Fellowship Initiative Award, Roberto's influence extends globally. Today, he's celebrated for his choreography and directing in film/TV, shaping iconic productions like "The Shape of Water", Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning Best Picture.

Robert Glumbek Choreographer: PAD Associate Director
A versatile dancer and choreographer, Robert began his journey in Poland's Bytom State Ballet School before joining The Great Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Warsaw. His career took him across Canada, working with renowned companies and choreographers, including the Canadian Opera Company and Desrosiers Dance Theatre. Glumbek's collaborations with artists like Karen Kain and Michael Ondaatje garnered acclaim, while his choreographic ventures, notably with ProArteDanza, earned him accolades such as the K.M. Hunter Artist Award. A four-time Dora Mavor Moore nominee, Glumbek's contributions to the dance world continue to inspire, with his works gracing stages internationally.

“Altogether, this was a passionate performance of a powerful work that I hope will go on to further productions, with eventually live orchestra and chorus and more elaborate technical elements.”
Jennifer Parr, The Whole Note

“…the work is quite beautiful on its own. A sombre work, yet rich with movement and emotion.”
Mooney On Theatre

“Campanella and Glumbek have given us a dance piece that is poignant, moving, and even hopeful. The 9th! is a triumph of choreographic creativity and should be seen across the country.”
