Matters of Life and Death
The final program of the Civic Orchestra's 40th Anniversary Season
2:00pm
$5 - $25
Event Description
It's the final program of the Civic Orchestra of Victoria's 40th anniversary season - and the stakes couldn't be higher. Join us for Matters of Life and Death, a collection of five passionate and delightful works that show off the expressive capabilities of the symphony orchestra.
The program opens with Beethoven's Overture to King Stephen, written to celebrate (and grease the wheels of) the newfound union of Austria and Hungary, followed by the Canadian premiere of Ruth Gipps' Ambarvalia, a tender tribute to a lifelong friend. The first half closes with a clash of pagan and orthodox traditions in Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov's vibrant Russian Easter Overture. Next, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's English charm is on full display in his Petite Suite de Concert, and we wrap up with Les Préludes, Franz Liszt's effort to encompass the entirety of the human experience in 16 minutes.
The Civic Orchestra of Victoria is please to bring Matters of Life and Death to the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre Stage under the baton of guest conductor Grant Harville.
