Event Description
Maurice van Hoek - On tour in Canada for the first time.
The idea to tour in Canada started in 2020. It was always a desire to go overseas and play. He always felt his music is more understood there. He started e-mailing venues and getting in touch with people that could maybe help him. It took shape once the first couple gigs started rolling in. But then Covid took over and he had to cancel all shows. Last September he thought he’d pick up where he left things off and now it’s official, he’s coming over. These are the shows:
April 27th - Ottawa Backpackers Hostel Ottawa
April 28th - Mussiiki Café Kingston
April 30th - Wolfe Island Hotel Wolfe Island
May 2nd - Brutopia Montreal
May 4th - Jethro’s Bar & Stage Peterborough
May 7th - The Dakota Tavern Toronto
May 9th - Richmond Tavern London
May 10th - The Cardinal Trenton
He’s very excited to play and hopes to see the Americana/Bluegrass/Country lovers in the area.
Maurice van Hoek (NL)
Maurice van Hoek, an Americana singer/songwriter from Holland, was promised a bright future in the genre by the dutch media ever since his first debut (Live Forevermore) in 2016. ‘Traveling Man (2018)’ was his second release. ‘Changing Lanes (2023)’ is his third release since his last EP ‘Church Sessions (2019). You could say the new album is a sequel to what came before. It shows his developing craftsmanship as a songwriter and musician but also his developments as a human being.
The last couple years he was collaborating with other artists. He played electric guitar in a band and produced and co-wrote a couple records. All these experiences made Maurice a more versatile musician, which you can hear on ‘Changing Lanes’. Strong vocals and thought through guitar parts give this record a seventies roots sound. Small songs with melancholy to west coast piano ballads to dragging bluesy songs but also mid tempo rock songs with a strong drive.
‘Changing Lanes’ is about the changes in these past years. The title song talks about these changes. He’s leaving the busy roads of the city to find way to a more peaceful life. Trying to find happiness in the calmness. But it’s also about new love and becoming a father for the first time. The B-side is more about reflecting and processing a heavy break-up. The light and dark side keeps ‘Changing Lanes’ balanced, just like himself.
