Event Description

Phonosonics is a Roots Reggae band from Victoria, BC. This powerhouse group specializes in vintage Jamaican Reggae, Rocksteady and Soul. They combine an electrifying danceability with soulful harmonies in a reverent update of a vintage style.
Lead by Spencer Cleave on Vocals, Guitar and Sax, Phonosonics also features Ned Saric on Drums. Anthony Shackell brings expert trumpet skills to the mix, which also features Ellen Crossley on vocals, Will Lynch on keyboards, Aidan Snider on guitar and various other local professionals who rotate in and out of the live band, flexing from 5 to 8 pieces.
Phonosonics has performed in club, party and festival settings. They have graced the stages of various festivals both high-end and grassroots, including the Victoria Ska and Reggae Festival and Rifflandia. They have performed tribute sets to classic soul and are as comfortable performing their own material as they are backing visiting reggae artists.

Apex Breaks
Victoria BC Ska and Reggae Society says
"The mighty maestros of mischief, the juggernauts of jungle funk, APEX BREAKS. Every time that Apex Breaks takes to the stage, their legend grows exponentially. Priding themselves on being one of the more fun, more unpredictable, more engaging band on the west coast right now. Apex Breaks lays down heavy funk with hits of hip-hop, soul, rock, dub and a big slopping plate of psychedelia. Made of some of Victoria's best musicians from a variety of beloved projects, when Apex Breaks is on the stage they radiate joy and fun as they indulge the audience in their shared love of music and the bonds of musical community."

Sweetleaf
Formed in Victoria in 2011, SweetLeaf is Victoria’s hardest-working and hardest-partying ska band. The members of SweetLeaf are seasoned Ska & Reggae Fest veterans, this year marking their third consecutive appearance. The group began after singer-guitarist Chris Jones answered an online ad, with the band then forming in just a few months. Their reggae-rock rhythms are reminiscent of hanging out with friends at the beach, drinkin’, smokin’, and straight West Coastin’. This local super-band performs with a punchy attitude contrasting the nature of their name.
With a three-piece horn section, SweetLeaf’s collaborative ska sound also pulls in influence from funk, soul, and punk. These boys know how to command a stage and keep an audience dancing. Having just released their debut LP, Stress Leave, SweetLeaf embodies new-age Canadian ska and reggae vibe.
