The film-fest favorite Past Lives is Korean-American playwright Celine Song’s, directorial debut, and heralds a staggering new creative voice in film. The movie centers on Nora, girl growing up in Seoul, alongside chum Hae Sung. The kid’s lives intertwine organically, forging a connection that neither can shake. Nora’s family leaves to start a new life in Canada, and the young friends are ripped apart. 12 years later, Hae Sung decides one day to reach out to Nora, eventually creating a video-call relationship where the two spend as much time smiling at each other as speaking. It is not to be. Neither is willing to give up their current lives, despite their obvious and intense connection. Just like that, another 12 years pass before they connect again. There aren’t spoilers, per se, but there’s no benefit to describing the rest of the movie. Like the first two acts, the ending unfolds with delicacy and care for its characters, nurturing their emotional lives while posing thorny questions about fate versus happenstance. –The Denver Post
