Event Description
Nuno felting is the process of wet-felting wool roving through a woven textile such as silk gauze or cotton scrim. The result of creating a nuno felted item, in contrast with traditional felting, is a much lighter finished piece with a wonderful drape and, depending on the fibre of the woven base, a subtle gloss or a ruched texture to one side of the project. This workshop is suitable for those new to felting or new to nuno felting, and participants will experiment with layout, design, texture and inclusions (prefelt, silk hankies, upcycled fabrics, yarns and silk roving) on a fabric such as rarified or excelsior silk. Supplies for the day's project, including hand and commercially dyed 19-micron Merino wool, the textile base, silk hankies, and various inclusions will be provided by the instructor. Note that the project pictured on the class poster is for example purposes only, and registrants will complete a smaller project.
Your instructor, Donna L Bennett, is a textile artist and experienced educator. Participants of her popular workshops comment that she provides clear and comprehensive instructions, and she structures her classes in such a way that participants get to experiment with colour, layout, and design while learning felting skills and having fun.
Note to Participants:
This activity can be challenging on the back as prolonged bending from the waist is required. Also, wet floor around your work space can pose a slipping hazard.
Please Bring:
-A bagged lunch, full bottle of water, and caffeinated beverage (if you'd like)
-Clothes you don’t mind getting wet (a water repellent apron is an option but not essential); Do not wear clothing with loose, dangling sleeves
-An old bath towel and a large bag for taking your wet felted piece home in (it will still be wet at the end of the session)
