Event Description
Terra Lightfoot is a JUNO- and Polaris-nominated powerhouse rock musician from Hamilton, Ontario. Ever since her incredible set at Back to the Farm two years ago, we’ve been hoping to get her into Doghouse. And the good news is, she’s coming this December in support of her new album, Healing Power (Sonic Unyon, Oct 13 2023).
A gutsy roots-rocker with a big molasses-drenched spill of a voice, Terra Lightfoot doesn’t ask for your musical attention; she bloody well rides over and takes it. It was not always thus, although music has been her constant companion since childhood, with an organ-playing grandmother and rocker aunt. Lightfoot made a tentative foray into solo performance in 2011 with a debut album that was, in retrospect, quiet and polite. Not yet comfortable with fully loosing her octave-spanning, note-bending powerhouse of a voice, showing off her bluesy guitar chops, it took some time as a member of the alt-country Dinner Belles to settle into her musical power. With sophomore album she slipped the leash of "quiet and polite" entirely. A recent tour with an all-female band and crew cemented her commitment celebrating women in music. A trip to Nashville to record her 2020 album Consider the Speed broke the dam wide open. There she quickly poured out over a dozen songs reflecting on life as a touring musician, past relationships, and the death of her grandmother – her most soulful, soul-baring, soul-searching record to date. Wielding her red Gibson SG with consummate swagger, and a voice that is more than a match for it, the power of Lightfoot’s voice and poetry is transporting.
With Healing Power, Terra Lightfoot showcases her considerable clout as a pop songsmith, delivering a dozen stunning tracks that together represent a career high. The album is her third outing with producer Gus van Go, and it is tribute to her creative ambitions and capacity that the collaboration is yet another quantum leap in her artistic development. Healing Power delivers the peerless pop-rock album that fans have long known that she always had in her. The set captures the crackling chemistry of the core live trio — most of the album finds Lightfoot backed by bassist Elijah Abrams and Blue Rodeo’s Glenn Milchem on drums. This compact and capable team of players reinforces the strengths of Lightfoot's remarkable material. From hand-clapping head-turner “Cross Border Lovers” through the cinematic ballad “Out Of Time” that closes the album, Lightfoot’s artistic range is again on full display, and her musical talents never short of dazzling. A buoyant pop-rock record at its core, Healing Power is a prismatic tour de force from the charismatic rocker.
