In an interview with Today's Trucking News, Jason McCoy makes no secret about the origins of his new band The Road Hammers. A bona fide country music star with four albums and a 2004 Canadian Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year award to his name, the Minesing, Ontario native formed the group at the urging of friends and relatives in the trucking business.
Along with a week-long stint in a truck as part of a tour for a children's charity last year, as well as a formative fondness for Red Sovine's trucking anthems like "Teddy Bear," McCoy was convinced to put together The Road Hammers with Chris Byrne and Clayton Bellamy. The band's self-titled debut, which hit the #1 spot in the Canadian country music charts, is a kick-ass mix of country, Southern rock and blues, with themes of lovin', losin', livin' and movin'. Smoking originals like "I'm a Road Hammer," "Keep on Truckin'" and "Overdrive" mix with covers like the banjo-infused Jerry Reed tune "East Bound and Down" and Little Feat's road-weary "Willin'." The result is a record with appeal to anyone who knows the endless possibilities and sadness of the endless highway strip, whether those listeners drive an SUV, a Volkswagen Beetle or an 18-wheeler.
Don't miss The Road Hammers live at the Commodore Ballroom on Thursday, October 13th with special guests.
