Event Description

Faculty Concert Series featuring
Anne Grimm, soprano
Bruce Vogt, piano
With Anna Betuzzi, oboe

Anne Grimm and Bruce Vogt continue their exploration of the songs of Irène Wieniawska, who, under her pen name Poldowski, composed some of the most powerful and poetic settings of French symbolist poets in the early part of the 20th century. In addition, this program will include songs from artists that demonstrate that the boundaries between ‘art’ and ‘popular art’ no longer truly exist, with songs by Rodgers and Hart, Noel Coward and Kurt Weil as well as a group of songs from the great Belgian chansonnier, Jacques Brel.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Soprano ANNE GRIMM is an internationally recognized performer, specializing in early music and baroque repertoire. Having appeared extensively in Europe and North America with companies such as the Nationale Reis Opera, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra; the Bethlehem Bach Choir and the Tanglewood Festival in the US; the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Taflemusik here in Canada among others, Ms. Grimm has enjoyed a varied and exciting career.

Professor of Piano at UVic, BRUCE VOGT appears regularly in concert across Canada and also inspires audiences abroad, including multiple tours in Japan and China and solo recitals and chamber music concerts all over Europe. Bruce’s recordings include music of Robert Schumann performed on a restored 1864 Erard, and two volumes of the music of Franz Liszt. In addition to his career as a soloist and chamber musician, Bruce is Professor at the University of Victoria. He is also active in presenting and improvising accompaniments to great films of the silent era, including films by Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Griffith, Murnau and others. Bruce has been invited to offer these presentations around the world.

UVic School of Music alumna, ANNA BETUZZI, is the Principal Oboe of the Victoria Symphony, having joined the orchestra in 2022. She also joined UVic as a Sessional Instructor of oboe at that time. Her principal teachers include Sarah Jeffrey of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Russell Bajer of the Victoria Symphony.
