Event Description
A night of women-led Afro-Cuban roots & jazz and mariachi! Presented as part of our Heritage Series, funded by Canadian Heritage. Concert is live and streamed.
Juno award winning duo OKAN, based in Toronto, fuse Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration, courage and love. Born in Havana, Cuba, Elizabeth Rodriguez is a classically trained violinist who served as concertmaster for Havana’s Youth Orchestra. Magdelys Savigne hails from Santiago de Cuba and graduated with honours in orchestral percussion from Havana’s University of the Arts. Both are also Grammy-nominees for their contributions to Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, of which they are former members.
Vancouver’s only all-female mariachi band lead by Michelle Cormier, Las Estrellas de Vancouver is comprised of a diverse, talented, and dedicated group of women musicians from a variety of backgrounds, including classical, jazz and world music. While all are involved in a variety of different projects, they came together out of their common love for mariachi music. Las Estrellas de Vancouver participated in the 1st International Women’s Mariachi Festival in Tlaxcala, Mexico and have hosted two Women’s Mariachi events locally with guest historian and founder of the Women’s Mariachi Foundation in San Diego, California, Dr. Leonor Xochitl Perez.
