Event Description
Alcheringa Gallery is very pleased to present a new exhibition of senior Cree artist George Littlechild. The exhibition - Thunderbirds, Warriors, & Chiefs - includes over 24 new, recent, and first-release original artworks.
Littlechild prolificly continues his four-decade-long exploration of his personal history through depictions of his relatives and muses, and their stories, contextualized in his recognizable expressionistic style. Littlechild has been a mainstay in Canadian art, and an instrumental figure in indigenous art of Turtle Island, during an important time of change. He was painting about the indigenous experience early on in his career, in a non-traditional contemporary format - exploiting the hardships and survival of indigenous peoples - while educating non-indigenous audiences.
A Sixties Scoop survivor, Littlechild uses mixed media on paper and canvas, to connect the pride of his ancestors, into the modern social context of lingering indigenous stereotypes and prevailing racism. His emotive use of bright colours and fast-moving painterly marks and cut assemblages draws the viewer into bold images of indigenous faces or old photographs.
George Littlechild holds a fine art degree from NSCAD University and an honourary Doctorate of Literature degree from the University of the Fraser Valley. He is also an accomplished educator and his work has been published widely including children's books, retrospective catalogues, and critical anthologies of the top indigenous artists of his era. He has developed a large following of his masterful art with pieces in major private, corporate, and public collections in Canada and abroad.
