Event Description
A note from Sarah
I will be giving insights about a place called SṈIDȻEȽ; a culturally significant place for the W̱SÁNEĆ people. Environmental restoration work will be discussed, why it is important, and how you can help. We will see what's in bloom down there and I will share my knowledge of the native plants I've grown to love. All of this knowledge has influenced my artwork, given me insights on who I am, and grounded me into W̱SÁNEĆ culture.
At a time when many of us are striving to build deeper connections with the communities we live in and the lands on which we live, Open Space is launching a new series of land-based livestreams. Filmed on Instagram and archived on our website, these weekly walks and talks will take us to different sites within Lekwungen & W̱SÁNEĆ territories to spend time with and learn from local Indigenous artists, educators, and knowledge keepers.
As an organization that cares deeply about our community, we are looking to find alternative ways to support and engage with local artists and community members during this time of heightened (dis)connection. It is clear that this moment offers us the chance to root more deeply into the lands around us, and re-examine the ways we have been relating to it and to each other. Beginning on April 5th, and starting each Sunday afternoon at 1pm, please join us for this series that will highlight stories and teachings about these lands we are on, and to guide us in thinking about the knowledge, cultural practices, and art that comes from these places.
The livestreams can be accessed at https://www.instagram.com/openspacevic/ by clicking on the Open Space logo. They will be accessible there for 24 hours following the event, after which time they will be archived on the website.
