Event Description
A Place to Listen is thrilled to Netherlands-based pianist Keiko Shichijo.
As a pianist & fortepianist, Keiko is a special voice in both the Classical and new music worlds. Her traditional Japanese sensibilities combined with her knowledge of European historical performance practices shape her unique vision, and this is reflected in her feeling for the music, the instruments and the story behind them.
Keiko will perform an immersive, hour-long work for solo piano, En Amor Duro, by Germany-based composer Maria de Alvear.
“En Amor Duro by Maria de Alvear is one of the most haunting, obsessive, confronting, but poetic and natural music I’ve ever encountered,” says Keiko. “In this music, there are no tempi, bar lines nor phrasing indications, almost no rhythms. The score is a map of signs and suggestions of notes with few mysterious texts that go with each movement. Repetitive notes on the score look like random rain drops! As the rain continues, it takes each listener on their very own emotional and spiritual journeys, which I believe are each very personal, intimate, and core.”
Hailing from Japan and residing in the Netherlands for more than a decade, Keiko is active around the world playing both solo and chamber music. She is a prizewinner in many international competitions and a specialist in contemporary music.
