English organist Matthew Brown will perform organ pieces by J.S. Bach, François Couperin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Jehan Alain, Louis Vierne, and will accompany soprano Rachel Allen of Victoria for two pieces: J.S. Bach’s “Öffne dich, mein ganzes Herz” and Henry Purcell’s “Evening Hymn”.
Matthew, a harpsichordist as well as an organist, is currently reading Music at the University of Bristol, England, and studying harpsichord under Colin Booth. Alongside his studies, he holds the Organ Scholarship at St. Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol, and has studied organ under David Stratkauskas in Victoria and Claire Alsop in Bristol. An experienced continuo player, Matthew has directed the University Baroque Ensemble in Bristol, and frequently accompanies on harpsichord and organ for soloists and groups in both the university and the community, such as the University Madrigal Ensemble and Baroque and Beyond, a Bedminster-based chamber group.
Rachel Allen, soprano, is a native of Victoria currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Previously a student of Nancy Argenta and Ingrid Attrot at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and Daniel Taylor at the University of Toronto, Rachel has appeared as a featured soloist with groups including the Victoria Baroque Players, Pacific Baroque Festival, Victoria Philharmonic Choir, and Toronto ensembles such as the chorus of Opera Atelier and University of Toronto Schola Cantorum.
