Event Description
On Wednesday March 20th, the A Place to Listen Ensemble will perform two new works by Venezuelan composer Gil Sansón and by APTL co-founder Daniel Brandes.
In 2015, Gil began to think about composing a piece for A Place to Listen. He was inspired by the practice of quiet and careful listening fostered at APTL, as well as the unusual timbral palette of the APTL Ensemble. After years of letting the idea slowly develop, the result is the new work Melodias con eco, an experimental pocket concerto for piano and open instrumentation. While composing Melodias con eco, Gil imagined, “a melody that leaves some sort of echo, with antiphonal responses emerging from the resonance of the melody.” Throughout the simple and elegant piece, the pianist plays a series of slow and free ascending phrases, alone and unaccompanied. Each soft, delicate, vulnerable phrase is answered and affirmed by an harmonic echo from the ensemble, which is freely orchestrated by the players in real time.
Melodias con eco will be performed alongside together-playing, together-listening, together-being, a new work by Daniel Brandes.
“Playing with my friends in the APTL Enesmble is one of the great artistic joys in my life,” says Daniel. “I haven’t composed a work for the full ensemble in some time, and I felt inspired to compose something for this specific group of people…something that reflects our particular and peculiar way of being together as musicians. Each time I play with this group, I am inspired by the deep sensitivity and receptivity that yields incredible musical courage and freedom.”
