MARCH 12 – 16, 2019
SOUND OF THE BEAST
Written & performed by Donna-Michelle St. Bernard
Black Theatre Workshop, Montreal and Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto.
“Sound of the Beast is an unusual, disarming display of poetic justice.” —GLOBE & MAIL
“A compelling and engaging storyteller, St. Bernard shifts easily from pointed remarks and calling out prejudice, to casual and conversational moments…Speaking truth to power in raw, real, fierce and funny Sound of the Beast.” —LIFE WITH MORE COWBELL
An unflinching work that examines the need for freedom of artistic expression not only in oppressively governed countries but also in our own. Donna-Michelle St. Bernard creates a vivid picture of the difficulties artists of colour have in creating their art whether it’s in Tunisia or Toronto. —SLOTKIN LETTER
“Donna-Michelle St. Bernard is a mercurial talent — emcee, theatre artist, and award-winning playwright. Her latest piece is an evening of performance poems, raps, and mini-lectures” —TORONTO STAR
In Sound of the Beast Toronto emcee Belladonna the Blest (Dora award winning playwright DM St. Bernard) shares stories of coming up in Toronto’s budding hip-hop scene, the intersections between conscious rap and political activism, and the sacrifices we make for the things we believe in. Part concert/part theatre the show blends the personal and the political, with a bold and brutally honest take about policing in Black communities.
