Event Description
After 30+ years of working life in health care, policy, planning, communications and performance management, Sharon found herself interested in learning to paint. On taking early retirement, and after experiencing a few art workshops, Sharon closeted herself away in 2007 and painted continuously for 4 months. Reviews from an art instructor and two other respected, well known artists were favorable. She made the decision to continue to paint.
Sharon loves colour and is also influenced by nature, in particular skies, seas and forests. Currently, she lives in Cobble Hill surrounded by fir, arbutus and maple trees. Trees and water are often the subject matter of her representational work.
Sharon does both abstract and representational acrylic work as well as work that she calls “bridging the gap”- paintings that lie somewhere in between abstraction and representation.
“ For a number of years, I have been experimenting with acrylic textures and with pouring acrylic paint. My abstract paintings are frequently reflective of this practice. Poured paint, in particular, lends itself well to the abstractive process. I enjoy painting negative spaces and have, in the past, completed a series (Forest) of more than 50 paintings based on this technique.”
An award winning artist, she is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Victoria Sketch Club, and the “Al Frescoes”, a group of plein air painters in Victoria.
