Event Description
“Herring has one of the most recognizable voices on alto saxophone in music today.” – ALL ABOUT JAZZ
Often hailed as the obvious successor to Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, alto and soprano sax master Vincent Herring is celebrated for putting a savvy contemporary spin on classic hard-bop. Playing with an exciting mix of fire and finesse, Herring and his veteran quartet perform contemporary jazz that is intense, soulful, and swings like crazy. The early 1980s saw Herring cutting his teeth with the Lionel Hampton Big Band; later, he played with Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Cedar Walton, Carla Bley, Jack DeJohnette, Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Hargrove – to name just a few. He has recorded over 20 albums as a leader, been on 250 recordings as a sideman, and appeared at nearly every major jazz festival in the world. Long regarded as a sax virtuoso with a uniquely intense and vigorous voice, Herring continues to tour the globe to great acclaim. Dave Kikoski piano, Yasushi Nakamura bass, Carl Allen drums
