What do thousands of beach sticks, hundreds of coat hangers and the Toronto Blue Jays’ 2015 season have in common? Under the creative hand of Victoria-based visual artist James Mulchinock, they perform together in A Colony of Things, opening at Xchanges Gallery on November 3rd, and continuing until November 19, 2017. His work takes a childhood passion for collecting and makes it an integral part of his art practice by collecting, arranging and transforming easily accessible objects, or their residue, such as driftwood, coat hangers or baseball marks. His aesthetic gravitates to objects that are both ubiquitous and unremarkable and transforms them into unified fields that exist between painting, drawing and sculpture.
