Event Description
For the fourth consecutive year, the Victoria Jazz Society will be hosting Jazz Festivals Canada’s annual networking and booking meetings in Victoria, British Columbia. These meetings will take place from October 16 through 20, 2017. Jazz festival artistic directors from across Canada (Victoria, BC to Halifax, Nova Scotia) will be meeting in order to develop national tours for both Canadian and international artists for the 2018 festival season.
As part of these meetings, the VJS, on behalf of Jazz Festivals Canada, is facilitating a Showcase featuring musicians/bands from across Canada and the United States at Hermann’s Jazz Club on October 17 through 19, 2017. The general public is invited to attend these ticketed performances. These Showcases will feature a number of separate performances each night.
Thursday, October 19 - Jazz Festivals Canada
Marc Atkinson Trio
The Marc Atkinson Trio performs acoustic guitar driven originals, drawing on a range of influences from gypsy swing to ragtime and Chopin. The trio rides the balance between edge of your seat improvisation and elaborate arrangements. Marc Atkinson guitar, Chris Frye guitar, and Joey Smith bass
Maya Rae
Maya Rae is faithfully continuing the tradition of young, prodigious voices taking their incredible talents to the jazz art form, and at only 15 years old she has an incredibly bright future ahead. Her debut album, Sapphire Birds, produced by Cory Weeds , was released earlier this year on the Cellar Live label, and shows a supremely gifted artist who is able to phrase like Sarah Vaughan but write a lyric like Joni Mitchell.
Adam Robert Thomas
Adam Robert Thomas, Juno nominated Canadian jazz vocalist, instrumentalist, engineer and producer, is introducing his new album Feel Alright, a funky and soulful jazz recording of all-new Canadian lyric-based compositions featuring top level and award-winning Canadian jazz instrumentalists. It is music to get people dancing and feeling good, while fully showcasing the talents of the involved performers. Adam Thomas vocals/guitar, Brad Turner keyboards, James Meger bass, Adam Cormier drums, and special guest Seamus Blake saxophones
Misha Piatigorsky Trio
Winner of the 2004 Thelonious Monk Composers Competition, pianist Misha Piatigorsky has made a living as a focused and driven artist, and his main focus for the past years has been his trio and a larger ensemble called The Sketchy Orkestra. He performs in Victoria with John Lee bass and Kelby MacNayr drums
