Learn the basics of screenwriting structure with Claire Mulligan!
Claire Mulligan is a screenwriter, editor, and novelist. She holds an MFA in screenwriting from Uvic and is focusing on adaptation for film and on writing for long-form TV. Her first novel The Reckoning of Boston Jim (Brindle & Glass) was nominated for the Giller prize and the BC book prize. Her second novel The Dark (Random House) was nominated for the Canadian Author's Award. Her award-winning short stories have been published in over thirteen literary journals. She teaches writing at Camosun College and works as a free-lance editor. She loves the nuts and bolts of writing. Structure makes her very happy.
Structure is the skeleton of film. Without it, nothing holds up. In this two-hour course we'll look at how three major works on structure have influenced film making: Aristotle's Poetics, Blake Snyder's Save the Cat, and Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. We'll look at the drawbacks and advantages of structure templates as well as at the intersection of plot, structure, and character development. We will then look at how to structure and make a beat sheet for a scene. Finally, we'll write a scene together, as well as reverse-write a beat sheet and/or structure template from a well-known film.
