Early Music Vancouver (EMV) presents J.S. Bach’s riveting masterpiece, St. John Passion, August 11, 2017, 7:30pm at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC. For this Vancouver Bach Festival headline event, esteemed conductor Alexander Weimann will lead a cast of internationally recognized Bach vocal specialists, the Vancouver Cantata Singers, and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra for a dramatic reading of one of the greatest works in the classical repertoire. Written using text mostly from Martin Luther’s German translation of the Bible, as well as poetry by Barthold Heinrich Brockes, this stirring work is the closest Bach ever came to composing an opera.
