Event Description

The fifty fifty arts collective, with the support of the Ministry of Casual Living, is programming Bonnie McComb Kreye Artist-in-Residence, Emily Grace Harrison, in the Ministry's Odeon Alley Window from June 20th to June 30th. On Thursday, June 15th at 6 30pm, join the collective and a host of artists and guests for a casual conversation on contemporary paint practices. During the conversation Harrison will have the opportunity to discuss the pieces she has been working on during her residency and what will be shown in the Odeon Alley Window.
--------------------------------------

Harrison works in a hybrid of painting, sculpture and assemblage. She has made installations for the Bata Shoe Museum with the Doors Open Festival, Strangewaves Festival, Camp Wavelength Festival and has performed projections in Walker Court at the Art Gallery of Ontario for “Last Wednesday,” organized by the AGO Youth. She recently curated a show on expanded painting practices for the Ontario College of Art and Design's public gallery and is the current artist with the Bonnie McComb Kreye Studio Residency in Victoria. Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Harrison is based in Toronto, Canada.

Statement

What makes a painting valid? Deconstructing styles and visual languages, I question the legitimacy of painting’s “seriousness,” and through creative play make works that challenge a Western bias for “the masterpiece.” Using a combination of long-standing painting techniques and less traditional methods, such as aerosol and collage, I create works that emphasize materials. My works enter fictional worlds or emote styles with historical precedence. I am interested in creating work at the intersection of these parallel readings.

------------------------------------------

the fifty fifty arts collective is comprised of individuals living and working on unceded and occupied First Nations Territories, specifically the lands of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, as well as the W̱SÁNEĆ, Sc'ianew and T'Souke First Nations.

The programming space itself is situated on Songhees and Esquimalt Territory but engages with individuals and communities across Turtle Island.

As a collective we endeavour to deepen our own understandings of how we are implicated in the history and in the present ongoing project of settler colonialism. As members of the fifty fifty arts collective we continually responsibilize ourselves to the complex kind of space that is the fifty fifty which hosts and facillitates the dissemenation of the ideas and work of others.
