Event Description

Join Nuu-Chah-Nulth Elderand founder of TheytusBooks, Randy Fred, for a discussion of his oral history project, Contact No Contact, which explores how diversity shapes what it means to be Canadian.

A film crew will be on hand with Randy until 4pm to record contact stories of 2 minutes or less from audience volunteers.

"We live in a diverse nation, but we don’t often talk about the space in which diversity comes together – the space of contact or no contact. In Canada, contact usually represents the historical meeting between First Nations and European explorers. Over the hundreds of years since then, contact has evolved into an abstract event. What better way to celebrate Canada 150+ than to challenge Canadians to capture how contact emerged or failed to emerge in their own lives.

From June to December 2017, Geist Foundation will collect short video and written contact narratives from across the country. Each story will give a glimpse into the space between nations. The Contact - No Contact website will feature 150 of these contact experiences.

This initiative brings together voices from every region of Canada, and will expose people to interactions between diverse peoples. They will break down barriers, create conversations, and inspire a deeper understanding of the events that shape our society."
