Event Description
Cyrus Chestnut Trio:
Fans of straight-ahead, blues, and gospel-tinged jazz will want to check out Cyrus Chestnut, a standout pianist who has performed alongside such legends as Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, and Betty Carter. Although predominantly a post-bop player, Chestnut is not a purist and happily draws elements of Latin, samba, and gospel into his masterly keyboard performances. Subtle and swinging, this easy-going virtuoso has been playing literally around the world for 20 years. His leadership and prowess as a soloist has also led him to be a first call for the piano chair in many big bands, such as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. Having recorded over 20 albums under his own name, this guy is the real deal.
Kandace Springs Trio:
There’s an increasingly loud buzz around Kandace Springs, the 27-year-old Nashville-based singer-pianist who combines old-soul jazz sophistication with a tasteful touch of R&B and pop. Although she had great early success with a sparkling debut EP, its combination of R&B and hip-hop wasn’t exactly where Springs wanted to be heading. A chance encounter confirmed this when, after hearing her cover of Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me,” Prince invited her to play with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain. Fully embracing her new mentor’s advice to ‘be who you are,’ Springs and her expressive, smoky alto soon migrated to Blue Note Records and relaunched herself as a bona fide jazz artist. Her Blue Note debut, 2016’s Soul Eyes, is nothing short of dazzling, revealing the influences of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, and Norah Jones. Springs makes her Victoria debut at TD JazzFest with Dillon Treacy drums, and Jesse Bielenberg bass.
