Melia Belli Bose is Assistant Professor of Asian Art History at the University of Victoria. She received her PhD in South Asian Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her first book, Royal Umbrellas of Stone: Memory, Politics, and Public Identity in Rajput Funerary Art (2015) examines memorial architecture commemorating members of the royal Hindu Rajput community in northern India. Melia holds an interest in the arts of death and memorialization throughout Asia and in 2014 guest-edited an edition of the journal Ars Orientalis titled “The Arts of Death in Asia.” She has also published on issues of gender in the arts of early modern and contemporary India and Bangladesh and recently edited and contributed to the volume Women, Gender, and Art in Asia ca. 1500-1900 (2016). Although her research is based in South Asia, Melia also teaches the arts of China, Korea, and Japan and greatly enjoys introducing her students to the sophisticated visual cultures, and underlying religious and philosophical traditions of funerary traditions throughout these regions.
