Event Description
workingclasstheatre welcomes everyone back to their 16/17 theatre season with The workingclass Opera! Now in its third year, the fundraiser for people who don’t like fundraisers has made its home in beautiful venues in Victoria; last year’s event took place in downtown’s The Atrium. This year is no exception, and the event is very grateful to The Royal BC Museum for having us in the beautiful Clifford Carl Hall. Black tie encouraged!
The workingclass Opera! is a fundraiser benefitting workingclasstheatre’s activities: creating opportunities for emerging artists and creating new connections in the performing arts community. workingclasstheatre tells classic stories through a contemporary lens, most recently staging Michael Shamata’s A Christmas Carol, and Cafe Soap Operas! at the Victoria Fringe Festival. This event is the company’s nod to classic performing arts, featuring local artists from other disciplines, and this year returns to its roots with a blend of contemporary dance and opera.
Broken Rhythm Dance Company under the artistic direction of Dyana Sonik-Henderson. Winners of three consecutive Pick-of-the-Fringe awards at the Victoria Fringe Festival, Broken Rhythms is on their way to the Toronto Fringe Festival, and a portion of the proceeds from the event support their artistic pursuits. Our vocalist for the evening is Mandy Wiltshire, who began training as a vocalist at 7 years old. Mandy has performed in several solo and choral performances including with Vox Humana, the UVic Chorus, the UVic Chamber Singers, and the Victoria Conservatory’s Opera Studio. She currently holds a Diploma in Voice Performance from Camosun and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Victoria.
