Event Description
A strange story of murder, missing people and twisted role reversals. As a young woman seeks to protect herself and her child in a northern community, her struggles are revealed. Part mystery/spy whodunit, this evocative dramatic first feature is ambitious and lush.
Shot on location in northern Saskatchewan, the landscape and village provide a unique location of site specificity. The lead actress’s engaging performance brings to the surface the interiority of her character’s internal struggles with life, love and a way of being in the world that isn’t about material possessions. Hiding out, moving from house to house, indicates a kind of lifestyle that is modern day nomadism, living with and on the land.
There is a constant sense of danger that she might get hurt – her bravery at times seems reckless but she is on a mission. Shot almost reservation-dogma style with plenty of natural lighting, the film’s overall pacing falls within indigenous temporalities. First Nations storytelling that combines First Nations and settler-descendent characters, this film represents a type of cinematic reconciliation, if such a thing is possible.
