MULTI JUNO AWARD-WINNER STEPHEN FEARING
RETURNS TO BC ROOTS TO LAUNCH NINTH STUDIO ALBUM
Multi JUNO Award-winner Stephen Fearing is celebrating his recent move to Victoria by launching his ninth studio record, Every Soul’s a Sailor, at a special album release concert in Oak Bay on Saturday, January 14th, 2017 and with an exclusive songwriting workshop for Victoria musicians on Saturday, January 7th.
With the new record, Fearing presents a set of ten songs that delve into the idea of The Journey - the various paths we take in love, life, and even after-love, and the after-life. The tracks span a range of musical styles from folk to pop to boot-stomping roots. Sonically, it has a lush, propulsive sound that draws in the listener with an almost hypnotic effect.
“I have traveled consistently between the two poles of solo and ensemble work. With this album I wanted to see if I could bring those two worlds together in the studio and then out on the road,” he explains.
One of the most talked-about songs on the album, Blowhard Nation, is a roots-rock anthem inspired by Donald Trump’s con-man campaign of hate and fear. Released in September 2016, Fearing is donating all of his proceeds from the sale of the single to War Child Canada. “How sweet to send money to the very people the Trumps of this world are throwing onto the trash heap,” Fearing explains.
ABOUT STEPHEN FEARING
Born in Vancouver, BC, in 1963, Stephen grew up in Dublin, Ireland where his schoolmates included future members of U2. In 1981 he returned to Vancouver and then became something of a musical nomad, making his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Guelph, Ontario; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a founding member of the Canadian supergroup Blackie and The Rodeo Kings (B&RK) and a multi-JUNO Award-winner for both B&RK and his solo music. Over the course of his celebrated career, he has collaborated with a long list of artists including Nick Lowe, Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, Pam Tillis, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Wilson, Colin Linden, Margo Timmins, and much more. He is a sought-after touring artist throughout Canada, the UK, and Europe. Eager to return to his West coast roots, Fearing moved cross-country in 2015 and now calls Victoria, BC home.
OPENING GUEST BLACK ANGUS
Black Angus' powerful performances take listeners from Vancouver Island to Ireland and back again, fueled by their collaboration and sheer enjoyment of the music. Black Angus' show has a high energy level and great stage presence that is instantly communicated to their audience. Black Angus is devoted to great songs, and is near-impossible to pigeon-hole: Traditional & contemporary Irish, acoustic roots, Americana, West Coast Celtic, blues and old-time are all part of the Black Angus sound.
