Event Description
Saxophone legend JOE LOVANO has recorded over two dozen of his own albums in the last 30 years. Master of soulful ballads as much as fiery improv, the talented Lovano is a gifted and prolific composer, and one of the most respected tenor players in the world. Lovano began playing professionally while attending the famed Berklee College of Music, eventually touring with Woody Herman for three years. Soon after, he joined the Mel Lewis Orchestra; playing from 1980 to 1992. Having since played as an equal with many of the global jazz elite, such as Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, and McCoy Tyner, Lovano won a Grammy in 2000, and in 2014 both the Jazz Journalists Association and Down Beat Magazine named him “Tenor Saxophonist of the Year.” It has been 20 years since Lovano last performed in Victoria – please help us welcome back this brilliant musical artist. Lawrence Fields piano, Peter Slavov bass, and Lamy Istrefi drums
Opening act will be Victoria’s own award-winning jazz vocalist Maureen Washington.
