Ederlezi is the name of the Balkan Romani holiday that welcomes the coming of Springtime. It shares the date and some of its tradition with the Turkish "Herdelezi" and the Serbian "Djurdjevdan" (St George's Day). A celebration marking the end of winter is a common thread throughout the Northern hemisphere, and Ederlezi was chosen as a nod of thanks to the marvelous culture that inspired this festival and its music.
The third annual Ederlezi Balkan Springtime Festival in Victoria will take place on Friday May 6 Norway House, 1110 Hillside. Virtuouso Romani trumpet master Demiran Cerimovic from Vranje, Serbia, the "New Orleans" of Balkan Brass, will be headlining the evening. He has won the prestigeous Guca trumpet competition in Serbia three times, and carries the rank of "Trumpet Master", one of only a dozen or so living trumpet legends with this title.
Orkestar Slivovica is a 10-piece brass band playing traditional Romani ("Gypsy") wedding and dance music from Serbia and Macedonia, including engaging vocals in Romani and Serbian/Macedonian languages and some forays into modern Roma style music.
There will be 3 full sets, interspersed with surprise guests. The orchestra will alternate between playing on stage and mingling with the dancing crowd, playing individually to people as they dance. This is typical of the genre back in "the old country", and a unique feature of this music that destroys the fourth wall as the musicians get up close and play inches away from their audience. Yes, earplugs will be available at the door!
There will also be a cash bar with Lighthouse beer on tap.
Orkestar Slivovica performs on the islands at least twice per year and has developed a loyal following: The Harvest Brass tour in 2011, Labour of Love tour in 2012, Balkan Wedding Caravan tour in 2013 and 2014 with Demiran Cerimovic and Lache Cercel, and many shorter forays for weddings and festivals, including annual appearances at the Godfrey Brownell Vineyard near Duncan.
