Event Description
Nicholas Pearce describes Go Figure:
"I have been teaching art for 10 years, and have been painting the figure for more than three decades.
"About eight years ago, I conceived the idea of holding a public showing of my paintings along with those done by students in my classes. My students use photo reference material I have painted from, as well as the techniques I’ve taught them, and the same limited palette of acrylic paint.
"But every painting is unique, even when the reference material is identical. Art is far more than just the image or the materials – it’s the whole experience with the painting. Each artist puts themselves into it.
"Painting is communication. You only know if it really works if it communicates with someone else. And the best way to see that happen is to show it.
"I want my students to experience doing a complete painting: The show is the last step. They jumped at the chance, and have thrown themselves into helping organize, promote and staff it.
"Almost all the show’s 150 works were painted from photo references using the ancient technique of gridding, a single, 1 1/2-inch housepainter’s brush, and five tubes of Golden acrylic paint (four colours plus white).
"I’ve participated in many shows in the course of my career, through my studio, my galleries and as a member of the select group of artists invited each year to attend Painters at Painter’s in Campbell River.
"Some of my students have already exhibited their work, but for many, this is their first show. Some student works will be for sale, but others will not: the paintings mean too much to their creators for them to part with.
"I’m proud to be sharing this show with them all."
Some of the flamenco dancers who have been painted by Nicholas and his students will attend the opening reception on Saturday, April 9, at 7 p.m., and will do a short performance.
