Event Description
After the success of the three week musical in Sooke with sell out shows and the music preview at Lucky Bar in Victoria The Who's Tommy is hitting Nanimo! This show features a full cast of talented singers performing the songs accompanied by a solid line up of musicians directed by Stephen J Horak (RADco, The Laundronauts)
Tapping into the Broadway production for their baseline stage performance, musical director Stephen J. Horak deviates from the Broadway score in order to make this show as loud and visceral as possible. Re-invigorating the original 1969 version of The Who’s TOMMY, he sets out to support a version of this show that incorporates all the volume and rock intensity of the Who’s live performances of the late 60’s, early 70’s.
TOMMY is the story of a traumatized child’s coming of age, his parent’s attempts to free him of his emotional handicap, and his subsequent release, triumph, and rejection comes entirely through the texts of the songs, mostly composed by Townshend with contributions from bassist John Entwhistle and drummer Keith Moon and an appropriation from American blues musician, Sonny Boy Williamson.
Arguably one of the most important rock albums of all time, TOMMY propelled The Who to super-stardom and originated the idea of “rock opera”. While it was a staple part of The Who’s live sets shortly after the album’s release in 1969, they have rarely performed it in its entirety since 1970.
A must see for all Who fans!!
