Grammy-award winning reggae band, INNER CIRCLE hits the stage at the Imperial in Vancouver on August 22 with their pop-orientated Jamaican beats that have made them leading stars since the mid-70s.
With a deep history and wide crossover appeal, Vancouver music fans will find themselves nostalgic over Inner Circle’s signature hits. The 1990s track, “Sweat (A La La La La Long),” exploded across the globe, topping the charts in multiple countries in Asia, South America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. In 1993, their album, “Bad Boys,” won them a Grammy and the title track of the same name became the theme song for Fox hit 90s show, Cops. It’s that song which almost everyone can sing along that has given Inner Circle their nickname, The Bad Boys of Reggae.
But Inner Circle exemplifies more of the positive vibes of the reggae genre than anything else. As one of the first Jamaican groups to tour the US, they haven’t stopped touring the globe, stopping in countries where few musical acts venture. “We are all one, regardless of our different ideas, and music is the best way to communicate that. Music is the highest language; it transcends politics, geography, and skin color, and it transcends all the things that separate people,” explains Roger Lewis, Inner Circle’s co-founder and guitar player.
With recent collaborations including a remix of Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dog’s “Young Wild and Free,” featuring Bizerk, and I-Octane, which has achieved an astounding 3 million YouTube views, and a revisitation of their classic song, Tenement Yard, with up-and-coming Jamaican artist, Chronixx, Inner Circle is also transcending generations. With new relevance in the reggae scene, Vancouver music fans will not only pay tribute to Inner Circle’s solid origins, but delight in new creative directions of an old favourite.
