Event Description
COASTLINE, one of Victoria's most exciting youth fiddle ensembles will be hosting their much anticipated Second Annual Fundraising Concert with Special Guests, Mairi Rankin, Ivonne Hernandez, Colleen Eccleston and Nellie Quinn - it will be a party you won't want to miss!
Coastline features a group of 15 exceptionally talented young musicians ranging in age from 12 – 20, coached and mentored by one of Canada's most outstanding fiddlers, Victoria's own Ivonne Hernandez. This award-winning band has already been making a name for themselves since their inception in January, 2013.
With 10 fiddles, 2 cellos, 2 guitars and piano, the group of talented teens play a diverse and exciting repertoire. With intricate arrangements of traditional, original, and contemporary fiddle tunes from around the world, Coastline is pushing boundaries and always having a great time whenever they play.
Individually, the members of Coastline have won many awards and competitions, and as a group, their talents blend to form a strong, united sound that is a force to be reckoned with. After being together for only a few months, they won the Large Fiddle Ensemble award at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival. They have since gone on to perform at many different festivals, venues and private functions including the Victoria International Highland Games & Celtic Festival, Victoria's Tartan Day, Coastline was the featured performance at the Victoria Folk Club and Celtic Vespers and have opened for such notable acts as the award winning band, The Fretless, Scottish Fiddle/cello duo Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, De Temps Antan among others.
With a keen desire to travel, perform and share their music, Coastline has big plans for the upcoming year. They have just released their debut self titled album to rave reviews and have been selected to represent Canada at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland in July 2015. Check out these great young musicians and prepare to tap your toes and clap your hands to our Coastline!
This spectacular evening of music will also feature:
Mairi Rankin...One of the hugely influential Rankin Family – legends on the Canadian music scene – she plays fiddle, sings and also step-dances up a storm. Born in Mabou, Nova Scotia, Mairi has been influenced by some of the best Cape Breton traditional musicians and instructors on the island. She has developed her own unique style by being immersed in such a rich musical culture.
Ivonne Hernandez...Ivonne is the reigning 5-time Grand North American Fiddle Champion and the recipient of numerous national and international fiddling awards. She is also in the popular chamber folk string ensemble The Fretless, who recently won a Western Canadian Music Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award.

Colleen Eccleston...Known for her emotional range and keen insight she writes beyond the love song into what makes us human in this wacky world. She is a rock singer/folk singer/songwriter/actor with a BFA in Theatre.
Nellie Quinn...Canadian folk fiddler Nellie Quinn is quickly gaining attention as an outstanding musician, captivating performer and versatile interpreter of Canadian traditional musics. At the age of 23, Nellie belies her young years through the depth and maturity of her music, no doubt a result of traveling across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom to study under some of the best fiddler players of today.
