Canadian photographer John Taylor is one of 12 artists across Canada to be inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in Montreal this May. Collections of Taylor’s artwork have been purchased by the National Gallery of Canada, Canada Council Art Bank and the University of Texas. His work has been exhibited at AGGV in Victoria, Vancouver Art Gallery, Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, Hamilton Art Gallery, NY University, Washington. D.C. Project for the Arts and in London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, and Tokyo.
John Taylor's photographic focus is architecture. Of local interest, Taylor was site photographer on St. Ann’s Academy, Victoria Memorial Arena and the Blue Bridge projects, among others. Taylor divides his work into two main categories, conceptual images which describe new ways of perceiving existing spaces and autobiographical work which places personal experience into a highly symbolic context with surrealistic qualities. Taylor has notable professional accomplishments working on assignment for the chief architect of NASA Space Centre, BC Attorney General’s Office and Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee.
Other notable Victoria artists who have received the RCA in past years include: Pat Martin Bates, Carole Sabiston, Walter Dexter, Robin Hopper, Chief Tony Hunt and Robert Amos.
