Event Description
The Shortest Day
Come in from the dark when The Victoria Film Festival unreels Canadian short films on the shortest day of the year. Bringing a newly popular French tradition to Victoria, the VFF is celebrating the fine art of short films on Sunday, December 21st. Join us for free screenings of The Shortest Day programs, including a family matinee, a Canadian comedy evening, and seasonal festivities.
The Shortest Day program showcases shorts from across the great white North, featuring Oscar nominated classics, animations, and new releases sure to please every palate. “[The Shortest Day] sheds light on the vast talent of up-and-coming filmmakers that Canada has to offer,” say Canadian actors, filmmakers and The Shortest Day spokespersons Michael Seater and Paula Brancati.
Enjoy a new French tradition with your family: our matinee event starts at 3PM, with the screening at 3:30PM. Parents can print off a seasonal colouring page for their young ones on the Victoria Film Festival website. Bring in your wunderkind’s work to display at The Vic and receive a complementary cup of warm apple cider!
Or, lighten up the longest night of the year in a cozy, candle-lit cinema with eight witty Canadian comedies. Starting at 7:00PM, we’re showing a selection of hilarious shorts. Outside, we are warming things up with a candle-lit walkway, or warm up from the inside with a glass of traditional European mulled wine ($5).
Both screenings are offered for free, so please arrive early to guarantee seating. Donations are welcome, and especially appreciated during the holidays.
Started in 2011 by the centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC) in France, The Shortest Day celebration of short film has emigrated to Canada, sponsored for its second year by Telefilm, The National Film Board, and SODEC.
