Event Description
The third concert of our new season presents three deeply personal works that all, each in their own way, explore and reimagine the notion of music making as creating community.
There will be two world premieres on the program. The first is Victoria composer Alex Jang's "Distributed Tourism" for open ensemble. In this beautiful and transparent work, the ensemble explores a strange and meandering melody that is played "at the threshold of audibility", with each musician playing or humming or whistling "all/some/none of the notes".
The other premiere is Daniel Brandes' new duo "A dwelling place for you", which was composed for Laura Brandes and Kristy Farkas, who will be giving the inaugural performance. In this work, Daniel continues his recent exploration of works that move away from traditional ideas of composition (and music in general) towards something more akin to the invention of spiritual practices.
The last work on the program is Leo Svirsky's "Among friends". Like Alex's work, this is piece is also a work for open instrumentation. It is a kind of music that presents the musicians (and listeners) with a space of gracious hospitality, where they are invited to wander, explore, linger, discover, and rediscover a melody by playing "the whole melody and/or fragments of the melody (any order, any transposition), softly to oneself, either alone, or with a small ensemble ..."
