Event Description

Live at the Commodore Book Launch in Vancouver

Aaron Chapman launches his book Live at the Commodore, an illustrated history of Vancouver's venerable Commodore Ballroom, on November 26 at the legendary club itself. Join us for history, readings, and live music. Admission is free with ticket or reservation.

The evening will be hosted by BC Book Prize winning author and CBC Radio 3 broadcaster Grant Lawrence, and will include plenty of entertainment from the Jazzmanian Devils and other surprise special musical guests.

Also featured as part of the evening, The Vancouver Heritage Foundation will present one of its Places that Matter plaques to the Commodore Ballroom recognizing its significance to the city as perhaps its most enduring and vital concert venue. The goal of the VHF plaque project, that began in 2011 with the 125th Anniversary of the incorporation of the city, is to raise awareness about the people, places and events that tell the story of Vancouver's history. The presentation will take place early in the program as part of the book launch celebration.

In Live at the Commodore, Aaron Chapman delves into the Commodore's archives to reveal stories about the constellation of characters surrounding the club over the last 80-plus years, as well as the startling, funny and outrageous anecdotes about the legendary acts that have graced its stage. Filled with never-before-published photographs, posters, and paraphernalia, Live at the Commodore is a visceral, energetic portrait of one of the world's great rock venues.
Book Warehouse will be offering signed books for sale at the event.

Aaron Chapman is the author of Liquor, Lust and, The Law: The Story of Vancouver's Legendary Penthouse Nightclub, a BC Bestseller and a BC Book Prize Finalist, and Live at the Commodore: The Story of Vancouver's Historic Commodore Ballroom. He is a writer, historian, and musician with a special interest in Vancouver's entertainment history. Born and raised in Vancouver, he has been a contributor to the Vancouver Courier, Georgia Straight, CBC Radio and this year's bestselling Vancouver history anthology Vancouver Confidential. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, he is also a member of the Heritage Vancouver, and the Point Roberts Historical Society.
