Event Description
Montreal jazz guitarist Mike Rud recently won the “Best Vocal Jazz Album” Juno Award, for his 2013 masterpiece Notes On Montreal. This album, which seamlessly segues between jazz and pop, is a stunning love letter to the city Rud calls home.
Here’s what the Ottawa Citizen’s Peter Hum, one of Canada’s foremost jazz critics, said in his review of Notes on Montreal: “It’s a deeply ambitious project to be sure, but it’s also a resounding success, establishing Rud not simply as a first-rate jazz guitarist but as a formidable songwriter and distinctive Canadian artist with a compelling vision to share.”
Rud wrote the music and lyrics over years, inspired by the literature set in Montreal by authors such as Mordecai Richler, Michel Tremblay, Gabrielle Roy, and Leonard Cohen. The album is a remarkable song cycle, featuring Sienna Dahlen’s expressive vocals, who’s work Ron Sexsmith called “beautifully compelling… soulful and unique.” Dahlen’s latest recording is Verglas (Justin Time Records).
Mike Rud, a former Victorian, has lived and played all over Canada, including at JazzFest International in Victoria in 2004 and as a featured guest artist with the UVic Jazz Band. He’s played with jazz greats such as Herb Ellis, Kenny Wheeler, Chuck Israels, Randy Brecker, and many others. He’s also studied privately in New York City with jazz master Jim Hall. He received his Master of Music degree from McGill University, where he has also taught.
This will be an intimate performance with Rud, a true jazz guitar artist, and Dahlen, one of Canada’s most versatile and original vocalists. They will be joined by Chad Linsley piano, Adrian Vedady bass, and Dave Laing bass.
