Many moons ago, 14 year old angsty teen-agers Genevieve and Chandra, headed out to their first guitar lesson. In Gen's co-op basement bedroom, they strummed bluesy original songs, and whined about boys and their parents. Fast-forward 24 years....
Though Gen dabbled in fiddle and singing over the years, she didn't really start to write music until she moved to Cowichan to homestead with her family. But once she got going, she couldn't stop! Tiring of relegating her songs to the campfire, she decided to put together a band to bring out the songs natural grooves and harmonies. She enlisted Kelly Sherwin, with whom she sings with in the Victoria-based acapella vocal group Balkan Babes, to play bass and back up vocals. Coming in with more vocal harmonies and adding some brushy percussion is Laura Carleton, a dancer and singing extraordinaire.
The newly dubbed Wild Sundays trio played a house concert in Victoria in the summer of 2013 and were encouraged by the response. However, they knew they needed an instrumentalist, someone who could handle breaks as well as add more vocal depth. Finally persuaded, Chandra, who had performed most recently with the Yiddish Columbia State Orchestra, joined up in the fall.
While the Sundays have a sound rooted firmly in American folk music, they draw on their collective influences of pop, eastern European, and even hip hop.
