Ouroboros Shadow Pictures is a shadow-theater company based out of Berkeley, California. It was created with the intention of collaborating with musicians and artists of different media. We are using this collaboration, as well as the mystique and ephemeral qualities of shadow, to express our material in a new way. In this production of “Vasilisa”, we are exploring the impact of the moving human body for the first time.
This piece is an original retelling of the Slavic traditional tales of Baba Yaga, the Wild Witch of the East. While she is typically seen as an evil character, there is a two-sided nature of Baba Yaga. She is both the helpful guiding muse as well as the purveyor of death. Throughout the piece, the complexity of her character becomes progressively more evident. We see Baba Yaga transform from a specter of death to a sage of the ancient cycles.
The story follows a young girl as she realizes and becomes a part of the supernatural world that surrounds her. The story is told through the interaction of dance, shadow imagery, and music. The intersection of these emotive art forms creates a haunting display of the human experience.
The shadows of objects and dancers are cast on a large, freestanding, fabric screen. The shadows of the dancers, on the screen, are manipulated to better express the narrative. Our method of using shadows creates strong portrayals of individual characters, emotional landscapes, and vivid surroundings. The imagery is synchronized with live musical accompaniment. The compositions are written specifically for this piece and play a large part in communicating the narrative. The music uses a wide variety of tools, ranging from sound effects to lush and melodic textures.
